There is something about a wide flanged bowl that I love. If you look at the edges you’ll see what looks like the sandy beach as the ocean pulls way. I live by the ocean has definitely had an influence on my mark making and my colour palette as well. The loose slip trailed lines of clay remind me of the whip of a fish tale as it cuts through the surface of the sea. Or… Perhaps it’s an iteration of bull kelp. I so love. This bowl started as a 25 lb lump of clay. Cone up and down. Centre. Open. Compress the bottom. Pull up the walls shape the walls. Slow down the wheel because centrifugal force want a to slam that bowl to the walls of my studio. Compress the rim. Remove it from the whee fornpartial drying until leather hard or hard cheese dryness. Get somebody to help turn that baby upside down onto another bat for trimming. My version of a salt rock. These remind me of little genie condominiums. Thus the name of the series is condos. I throw these by first throwing the funnel inside (where the salt goes on and out) and the the remaining clay gets thrown around it as an enclosed form surrounding the funnel. They remind me of the salt shakers you may see on a tea table in alice in wonderland or at dr Zeus dinner table
