I have a friend that’s a quilter. She finds all kinds of remnants of fabrics from articles of clothing that have some emotional connection to her be it her kids old pjs or her mother’s tea cozy. You get the point. Well these mugs are somewhere between the prairie farm land from the sky and a quilt. Or maybe they are more industrial than any of those things. Hmmm. Great, something else to ponder on a Thursday eve. What do you think? Thoughts welcome as always.

Each piece in this series has so much to say. I was talking with a student earlier today about the shift in my work from years ago when I used underglazes and slips and a clear glaze. I felt like although those pieces were good and joyous they didn’t really say much as a narrative. They sort of said (if anything) “everything is fine. I’m happy. Nothing is wrong… ever. “. When I think back they were pieces that you looked at but they had a barrier to them that kept you from looking deeper or questioning anything about them. It was likely my way of saying “you can look, but you can’t come in”. As I have grown, both in age and as an artist I am more interested in authentic relationships and am prepared to be more vulnerable. Everything is not always just fine and okay and I am not always happy. My work now, such as this series of Northern Lights invites one to explore it, to consider it, to spend some time with it. It’s not uni-dimensional. There is no barrier to these pieces saying. You can only come just so close, then go on your way. These pieces invite you in. To get to know the piece, to see something a little different each time you hold it. I don’t know if any of this is clear. Do you get what I’m saying? All to say, I’m a little more complex and layered as I mature and I’m seeing that reflected in my work. Thanks for listening.

How great to be featured by @quarterly.culture here in the #comoxvalley. I love sharing my love of clay with my students and my fellow valley-ites. .. Repost @quarterly.culture with @get_repost・・・It was hard to pick which mug of Cori Sandlers to post because they are all so amazing! Do you ever wake up and just say, I need a change? Well. Many of us struggle with “are we good enough” “ will I ever make another nice pot again” “ I’m a fraud” i wish I could say every pot that comes out of my kiln is great, but… I have been in an unsettled place with my work for a bit. So… I keep trying new ideas and testing glazes and surfaces … dipping. Spraying. Rubbing. Painting. Carving. Altering. Adding. Etc etc. Well folks, I’m quietly holding it in but… I think I found a new voice or rather an old voice is speaking again. I made a couple of mugs like this about 8 yrs ago and soda fires them. I loved them, gave them away as gifts and never revisited them. Well. This is not sodafired, non atmospheric at all. Electric! And I feel like a cat with a canary in my mouth. I don’t want to let this one go. Not the cup, nor the direction. Thoughts? Just missing about my life as an artist while at the Calgary airport waiting for my partners flight to land.

Sun is out and rains have gone for the time being. What does this remind you of? Me, it reminds me of the ocean and of bull kelp floating into the beach. This was the last ball of clay I threw in the batch of mugs I made and … it’s quite different than the other series of mugs I was making. Clay is kind of like our emotions. A dent here, a press in there, a swipe here. It all shows up, no way to hide it. Like these impressions in this mug. Thoughts?

The girlfriends are back. Horse Baked Lady mugs just make me so happy. It’s like all my girlfriends are hanging out with me in the studio. … and I do mean “hanging out” 🤭🤭🤭 I only made a handful this round. This series is about celebrating women. Women and girls of all shapes and sizes. We are all PERFECT. Have you ever felt not quite the right size or shape or not the right… whatever? Well I say enough is enough!!! We need to teach our young girls that they are perfect – full stop. And while we are at it, let’s rewrite our own stories we tell ourselves too. Whadyasay??? Are you with me. Let’s celebrate each other.

What a sweet post from @gibranstudio It makes my day when someone receives my pottery and is delighted with it. Thanks Carly. Enjoy it!!!!!・・・I'm in LOVE with my very-first-just-arrived-best-part-of-my-day MUG from CORI SANDLER! (@corisandlerpottery) Seriously. Check out that surface! So subtle, so satin-y! It arrived with the sweetest card and a CD of an all woman music group that our Cori was part of ♡ Current soundtrack for our living room dance party! #claypeoplearethebestpeople #claysoul #claybuddies #artistfriends #claycommunity #newmug #womensupportingwomen
